Save our oceans: Alert against global overfishing!
unsustainable fishing practices and how they are damaging the underwater ecosystems

Who are we?
We are the team of life below water in MIS and we studied the dangers of overfishing and how it affects underwater life, marine biodiversity and marine ecosystems and we’ll explain it here.
Depletion of Fish Stocks.
Overfishing occurs when fish are caught faster than they can reproduce, leading to the collapse of species like cod and tuna. This disrupts the balance of marine ecosystems and threatens food security for millions who rely on fish as a primary protein source.
Bycatch and Ecosystem Damage
Industrial fishing often results in bycatch, where non-target species like dolphins, turtles, and seabirds are unintentionally caught and killed. This harms biodiversity and weakens the resilience of ocean ecosystems.
Impact on Coastal Communities.
Small-scale fishers in developing countries suffer as industrial fleets overexploit resources. Depleted fish stocks reduce their livelihoods, increase poverty, and force communities to seek unsustainable alternatives.
Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing.
IUU fishing accounts for up to 20% of global catches, undermining conservation efforts. It often involves practices like fishing in protected areas or using banned gear, further depleting marine populations.
Contribution to Climate Change Impacts.
Overfishing weakens marine ecosystems’ ability to sequester carbon, as healthy fish populations and habitats like seagrass beds play a role in carbon storage. This exacerbates climate change effects on oceans, such as warming and acidification.
Threat to Global Food Security
With over 3 billion people depending on seafood, overfishing risks long-term shortages. If current trends continue, many fish stocks could collapse by 2050, leading to higher prices and reduced access to this critical food source.
An example of sustainable fishing
The spiny lobster is an example of a sustainable fishing practice
How do they keep fishing the spiny lobster sustainably?
- Theres weight limits on the amount you can fish
- There’s predetermined periods on when you can fish it’s called the fishing ban
- there’s a length limit and if the lobster has eggs you have to put it back in the ocean

Some advice you can do to help the cause
- First make sure your fish manufacturer you are buying or using, uses sustainable fishing practices
- If you fish or know somebody that fishes make sure your practices are sustainable and good for the marine ecosystems
- And at least you can probably choose abundant species like sardines, anchovies, pacific salmon or squid and make sure those were fished with environmentally safe methods
“Feel the heartbeat of the ocean—every fish we save today ensures a thriving sea for generations tomorrow; join the fight against overfishing and protect the life beneath the waves!.”
